marco.broekman participated in the “Atelier Stadseiland” in Utrecht, organized by Architectuurcentrum Aorta. With the atelier, Aorta offered free experimentation space to designers and other experts to outline scenarios that contribute to the healthy urbanization of Utrecht, in the densification task where the city stands for. Utrecht expects to have a population of 400.000 by 2040, and wants to accommodate the growth within the existing city. The study area for this healthy urbanization is the Stadseiland (City Island), the district situated between the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and the Merwedekanaal. The Stadseiland is located centrally in the region and could possibly function as a switch between the inner city and the rest of the Utrecht region. The predicted growth of Utrecht has lead to several projects in and around the Stadseiland, while urgent tasks such as target groups and co-creation, green framework, new mobility and energy ask for a vision on the whole Stadseiland. Together with Gerwin de Vries (LINT landscape architecture) and Marije van Bork (HIK ontwerpers), marco.broekman explored the four themes mentioned above and designed a integral strategy for the Stadseiland: ‘’New Stadseiland Utrecht’’.

An unambiguous vision is no option: the Stadseiland has a large diversity of neighborhoods, functions and characteristics. This mosaic forms the base for a customized strategy, which is structured by a coherent framework. In the framework, a high quality public transport network can be laid out, in order to create car-free zones within the living areas. An extensive network for both fast and slow traffic will attach the Stadseiland better to its surroundings. At transport nodes, car sharing parking facilities serve as batteries for energy production and consumption, which will be connected with smart networks in the neighborhood. Next to the current densification plans of Merwedekanaalzone, Stadseiland as a whole can be densified, with concentration at transport nodes, along the water side (‘Rondje Stadseiland’) and with small scaled organic densification in the existing neighborhoods. With this strategy Stadseiland has enough critical mass to develop into a sustainable, healthy, mixed city part of Utrecht.
